One New Man Holland, Jan 25, 2023

Old, simplistic Christian understanding of One New  Man: Jesus died to forgive our sins, purify us, sanctify us and make us love one another, make us one! He did this by cancelling/replacing the old with the new, the Jewish with the Christian.  One New Man==”A Third Race” (Chrysostom), neither Jew or Gentile, but universally Christian. (Gal 3:28: There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”)

ONE NEW MAN “The Full “middle” road of Eph between Gal 3:28 and Rom 11:28-29

-hinges on two main points: dogmasin and “in Him, in His flesh”

  1. The dogmasin of v. 2:15; he cancelled, do away with, abolish? What is it? What are they?

-the wall of enmity metaphor…around Israel, no definition here, must look elsewhere.

-Col 2:14 Erasing the hand-written debt sheet of dogmasin…

-Col 2:16-20: foods and festivals, angels, etc.

2:20 why do you dogmatize yourself? Why do you obligate yourself, “don’t handle, don’t taste, don’t touch…

Why?? What does this have to do with our peace, our unity?

  1. Eph 2:13-16 “by his blood, He Himself is our peace, abolishing in His flesh, in Himself, one Body

The WALL/enmity version of the equivalency: enmity=dogma=Israel=His body, His identity, transformed….

-Jesus as Israel, Son of God. (Mt 2:15 “Out of Israel I called my Son; Exodus 4:22 “Israel is my Son, my firstborn; Hosea 11:1 “Out of Israel I called my Son…them, them…”)

-He was born under the Torah; prevented from going to the gentiles. (Gal 4:4; Mark 7:24-29)

-Israel/Jacob (Isaiah 41:8-10): God speaks to the nation and people of Israel, still as “Jacob my Servant.”  The One who represents the whole.

-Jesus the living Torah, the embodied Torah/Israel; Jewishness defined by the dogmasin commands of Food, Feasts, and Purity Laws; the wall of separation in His flesh, His very identity.

-All of this is crucified on the cross, the dogmasin certificate of debt (Colossians 2:14)

  1. But that’s not the end of the story. He is risen! Now, who is he?

Rev 5:5 “The Lion of the Tribe of Judah, the Root of David…”  Still the King of the Jews…but more

Isaiah 42:6; 49:8  ברית עם    covenant of/for/to the people in context of the Servant being a light to the nations.

He can now be related to by a million Chinese, a million Dutch, etc. in their own language, with their own culture, traditions, etc.

Gal 4:4 But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law,

Mark 7:27-8 27 “First let the children eat all they want,” he told her, “for it is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”

28 “Lord,” she replied, “even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.”  NO REVIVAL as in Shomronian woman, half Jews.

Gal 3:28
